October 23 - November 21
Scorpio's ruling planets: ♇ Pluto, ♂ Mars.
Scorpio (Latin name Scorpio) is a southern zodiac constellation in the Milky Way, located between Sagittarius and Libra. In Scorpio, the Sun spends only one week in autumn (from November 23 to 29), before transitioning to the constellation Ophiuchus for 20 days.
Interestingly, the Aztecs had the exact same name for this constellation - Kolotl, meaning Scorpio. However, the inhabitants of the island of Java referred to this constellation as the Inclined Palm or the Thoughtful Swan.
A multitude of bright stars outline the silhouette of Scorpio in the night sky. The most notable among them are Shaula, Sargas, and Antares - the brightest star, a true gem in the constellation's crown. Translated from Greek, Antares means "Rival of Ares," referring to the god of war, Mars. This name was likely given to Antares because of its color - this red supergiant appears remarkably similar to Mars when observed from Earth and indeed proves to be a worthy rival. Antares is truly a remarkable star - its brightness is 9,000 times greater than that of our Sun, and its diameter is over 700 times larger. Additionally, Antares is a binary star: beside the red giant, there is its pale-blue stellar companion.
According to ancient Greek legend, the goddess Artemis quarreled with Orion and sent a poisonous scorpion to him. The scorpion stung Orion, and the bite proved to be fatal. However, the starry Orion always manages to escape from the starry Scorpio: while the constellation Scorpio rises in the eastern sky, the constellation Orion is already disappearing below the horizon in the west.
