What the 1st house means
The 1st house in your birth chart describes your personality: your character, temperament, and basic pattern of behavior. It reveals how you present yourself and how others see you. The first house is considered the most important of all the houses, the lens through which the rest of the birth chart should be viewed.
If your 1st house is empty
The natural ruler of the 1st house is Mars; the house is traditionally associated with Aries. Even without planets here, this area of life isn't switched off. You read it through the position of Mars in your chart.
This also means that qualities associated with Mars will show through in your character and your sense of self. Mars is the planet of tremendous energy and powerful passions. Its motto is "I act!" Mars governs your emotions, passion, urge to get things done, and appetite for life, along with intense emotional impulses. The planet has a masculine nature that can give rise to aggression.
Yet Mars is also what gives you the drive and strength to move boldly toward your goal, regardless of the obstacles in your way.
If several planets occupy your 1st house
You're a mysterious person whose character more or less developed on its own. No one really took charge of raising you as a child: your parents had other things to worry about, and your teachers couldn't get everyone on the straight and narrow. The result is a fairly self-sufficient specimen who can occasionally be relied on. You don't like making promises: principle will oblige you to keep them, which spoils your mood and leaves you feeling pressed into service.
You're independent and can't stand being judged by people you don't know. You like people who offer unsolicited advice even less. Of course, you won't start an argument, but you'll try to get rid of the well-meaning adviser. Determined to think for yourself, you never let anyone else run your life. You prefer not to attract attention, so you try to stay out of the thick of things, always taking a supporting role—it's more peaceful that way. You value solitude and withdraw from society now and then: even the nicest people require a break.
