Your Ascendant is the zodiac sign rising on the eastern horizon at the moment you were born. It's your outward face, the first impression you make, and the way you carry yourself in public: what people see before they get to know you.
What is the Ascendant?
Unlike the Sun, Moon, and planets, the Ascendant isn't a celestial body. It's the point where the horizon meets the ecliptic at your particular birthplace and moment of birth. That's why an exact birth time is essential to calculate it. In two hours, it can move through an entire sign, and even a few minutes make a noticeable difference to its position within that sign.
The Ascendant is also called your rising sign. It describes the way you walk into a room, what strangers notice first, how you hold yourself, your taste in clothes, and your immediate response to a new situation.
How is your rising sign different from your Sun sign?
Your Sun sign describes who you are on the inside: your essential nature, character, and vitality. Your Ascendant is how you present that nature to the world. An Aries with Cancer rising hides Mars's drive behind a soft, caring exterior. A gentle Cancer with Aries rising does the reverse: an assertive, decisive manner conceals a vulnerable, sensitive nature. That's why two people with the same Sun sign but different Ascendants can make completely different impressions, and vice versa.
