An eclipse is a new or full moon that happens near the lunar nodes – the points where the Moon's orbit crosses the plane of Earth's. Astronomically it is a shadow falling on Earth or on the Moon. In practice it is a lunation that works for months instead of a day, which is why it counts as a turning point. Across 151 years the calendar holds 681 eclipses.
Eclipses in 2026
Most years have four eclipses, sometimes five, occasionally six or seven. They come in pairs – a solar and a lunar one about two weeks apart.

People look up past eclipses as often as future ones – "which eclipse happened the year I was born" is To see the eclipses of your birth year, pick that year.
How it works
Why not every new moon is an eclipse
The Moon's orbit is tilted about 5° to Earth's. Most of the time the Moon passes above or below the Sun–Earth line and no shadow lands. An eclipse only happens when a new or full moon coincides with a node crossing.
What a saros is
A series of eclipses that repeats every 18 years, 11 days and 8 hours. Within one series the eclipses resemble each other and drift slowly across the Earth's surface. The saros number is an eclipse's family name: it shows which past eclipses it is related to.
What magnitude means
How much of the disc is covered at maximum. Below one means partial or annular; above one means total. For a lunar eclipse, a magnitude above one means the Moon has entered Earth's shadow completely.
What to do about it
Don't make final decisions inside an eclipse corridor: the picture is still moving. What you do get is clarity about what actually matters – eclipses have a way of bringing up what you had been putting off.
How This Calendar Is Calculated
If you are comparing dates with another calendar and see a gap of a few hours, check the time zone: the default here is Eastern Time. You can switch it in the panel above the tables.
The wheel uses the tropical zodiac, 0° Aries on the left, signs running counterclockwise. The lines in the middle are the exact angles between planets at that moment.
