Retrograde Planets in January

The bar shows what part of the month each planet spends moving backward. Retrograde motion isn't a "ban" – it's a change of rhythm: the planet's theme needs more attention and a second look.

1 6 11 16 21 26 31
Mercury
From January 24 to Feb 14, 2028
Jupiter
From January 12 to May 13, 2028
Uranus
From Sep 15, 2027 to Feb 12, 2028
Chiron
From Aug 7, 2027 to January 10
  • Mercury retrograde – deadlines drift, devices act up, and agreements are worth re-reading and saying out loud twice.
  • Jupiter retrograde – growth goes deep instead of wide: beliefs get re-examined, and so does what you counted as luck.
  • Uranus retrograde – change moves inward – quieter on the outside, rearranging on the inside.
  • Chiron retrograde – an old wound speaks up again – so that it finally gets heard.

Void of Course Moon in January

The void of course Moon is the gap after the Moon has made its last exact aspect in a sign and before it enters the next one. The classic rule is that whatever begins then "comes to nothing" – bad for launches, signatures and purchases, good for routine, tidying, rest and finishing off old things. This month has 14 of them, 112 hours in total, of them 4 long ones (over 12 hours).

Starts Ends Duration Last aspect Moon enters
December 31 January 1 18 hr 11 min Sextile to Saturn in Pisces
January 3 January 3 5 hr 13 min Opposition to Jupiter in Aries
January 5 January 6 16 hr 49 min Conjunction to Saturn in Taurus
January 8 January 8 4 hr 25 min Trine to Jupiter in Gemini
January 10 January 10 4 hr 07 min Square to Jupiter in Cancer
January 12 January 12 3 hr 58 min Sextile to Jupiter in Leo
January 13 January 14 13 hr 45 min Trine to Saturn in Virgo
January 16 January 16 4 hr 13 min Conjunction to Jupiter in Libra
January 18 January 18 3 hr 09 min Square to Sun in Scorpio
January 20 January 21 4 hr 53 min Sextile to Jupiter in Sagittarius
January 23 January 23 5 hr 15 min Square to Jupiter in Capricorn
January 25 January 25 5 hr 36 min Trine to Jupiter in Aquarius
January 27 January 28 16 hr 02 min Sextile to Saturn in Pisces
January 30 January 30 6 hr 07 min Opposition to Jupiter in Aries

We count the classical (Ptolemaic) aspects from the Moon to the Sun and to the planets from Mercury to Pluto. Sites that count only the seven traditional planets get longer windows – sometimes by a day or more.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an astrology calendar, exactly?

It is a schedule of what happens in the sky: when planets form exact angles to each other (aspects), when they move from sign to sign, when the Moon goes through its phases, and when a planet turns retrograde. A horoscope is somebody's interpretation. An astrology calendar is the raw data those interpretations are built on.

Why don't your times match another site?

Usually it is the time zone. Many astrology sites publish in Universal Time (UT), and we show Eastern Time by default, which is 4 or 5 hours behind it. That alone can move an event to the neighbouring day. The time zone switch in the panel at the top settles it in a second.

Does an aspect work exactly at the minute you list?

That is the minute it goes exact. The effect is felt wider – usually a day before and a day after, and for slow planets, for weeks. The exact time tells you where the peak is; it is not something to set an alarm for.

What do you do with a void of course Moon?

Don't start anything that matters in that window: signings, purchases, introductions, first meetings. It is excellent time for routine, for clearing the backlog, for tidying up and for rest. The windows run from a few minutes to a full day – see the table above.

Is a retrograde planet a bad thing?

No. Retrograde motion is an optical effect: from Earth the planet appears to move backward. Astrologically it is a change of mode: the planet's theme works inward and backward instead of forward. The only bad move is pushing hard at something that has no tailwind right now.

Where do these numbers come from?

We calculate the dates from the NASA JPL ephemerides JPL DE440. There is more about the sources and the checks on the methodology page.

Take the calendar with you The month's events as a single .ics file: it opens in Google Calendar, Apple Calendar, Outlook and anything else that understands the format. It downloads immediately and asks nothing about you.
