Retrograde Planets in May

The bar shows what part of the month each planet spends moving backward. Retrograde motion isn't a "ban" – it's a change of rhythm: the planet's theme needs more attention and a second look.

1 6 11 16 21 26 31
Mercury
From May 21 to Jun 14, 2028
Venus
From May 10 to Jun 22, 2028
Jupiter
From Jan 12, 2028 to May 13
Pluto
From May 9 to Oct 18, 2028
  • Mercury retrograde – deadlines drift, devices act up, and agreements are worth re-reading and saying out loud twice.
  • Venus retrograde – you get pulled back to what already happened: old relationships, old purchases, an old sense of taste.
  • Jupiter retrograde – growth goes deep instead of wide: beliefs get re-examined, and so does what you counted as luck.
  • Pluto retrograde – deep work: the old lets go slowly and with no witnesses.

Void of Course Moon in May

The void of course Moon is the gap after the Moon has made its last exact aspect in a sign and before it enters the next one. The classic rule is that whatever begins then "comes to nothing" – bad for launches, signatures and purchases, good for routine, tidying, rest and finishing off old things. This month has 14 of them, 228 hours in total, of them 11 long ones (over 12 hours).

Starts Ends Duration Last aspect Moon enters
April 30 May 1 21 hr 14 min Sextile to Jupiter in Leo
May 2 May 3 19 hr 41 min Sextile to Venus in Virgo
May 4 May 5 18 hr 20 min Square to Venus in Libra
May 6 May 7 17 hr 42 min Trine to Venus in Scorpio
May 8 May 9 19 hr 23 min Opposition to Sun in Sagittarius
May 10 May 11 18 hr 53 min Opposition to Venus in Capricorn
May 13 May 14 12 hr 47 min Trine to Sun in Aquarius
May 16 May 16 7 hr 56 min Square to Sun in Pisces
May 19 May 19 2 hr 31 min Sextile to Sun in Aries
May 20 May 21 23 hr 34 min Sextile to Venus in Taurus
May 23 May 23 20 hr 36 min Conjunction to Mars in Gemini
May 25 May 26 21 hr 36 min Square to Jupiter in Cancer
May 27 May 28 13 hr 28 min Sextile to Mars in Leo
May 29 May 30 10 hr 32 min Square to Mars in Virgo

We count the classical (Ptolemaic) aspects from the Moon to the Sun and to the planets from Mercury to Pluto. Sites that count only the seven traditional planets get longer windows – sometimes by a day or more.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an astrology calendar, exactly?

It is a schedule of what happens in the sky: when planets form exact angles to each other (aspects), when they move from sign to sign, when the Moon goes through its phases, and when a planet turns retrograde. A horoscope is somebody's interpretation. An astrology calendar is the raw data those interpretations are built on.

Why don't your times match another site?

Usually it is the time zone. Many astrology sites publish in Universal Time (UT), and we show Eastern Time by default, which is 4 or 5 hours behind it. That alone can move an event to the neighbouring day. The time zone switch in the panel at the top settles it in a second.

Does an aspect work exactly at the minute you list?

That is the minute it goes exact. The effect is felt wider – usually a day before and a day after, and for slow planets, for weeks. The exact time tells you where the peak is; it is not something to set an alarm for.

What do you do with a void of course Moon?

Don't start anything that matters in that window: signings, purchases, introductions, first meetings. It is excellent time for routine, for clearing the backlog, for tidying up and for rest. The windows run from a few minutes to a full day – see the table above.

Is a retrograde planet a bad thing?

No. Retrograde motion is an optical effect: from Earth the planet appears to move backward. Astrologically it is a change of mode: the planet's theme works inward and backward instead of forward. The only bad move is pushing hard at something that has no tailwind right now.

Where do these numbers come from?

We calculate the dates from the NASA JPL ephemerides JPL DE440. There is more about the sources and the checks on the methodology page.

Take the calendar with you The month's events as a single .ics file: it opens in Google Calendar, Apple Calendar, Outlook and anything else that understands the format. It downloads immediately and asks nothing about you.
