Retrograde Planets in January

The bar shows what part of the month each planet spends moving backward. Retrograde motion isn't a "ban" – it's a change of rhythm: the planet's theme needs more attention and a second look.

1 6 11 16 21 26 31
Mercury
From Dec 29, 2022 to January 18
Mars
From Oct 30, 2022 to January 12
Uranus
From Aug 24, 2022 to January 22
  • Mercury retrograde – deadlines drift, devices act up, and agreements are worth re-reading and saying out loud twice.
  • Mars retrograde – the drive turns inward: head-on attacks stall, finishing what you started goes well.
  • Uranus retrograde – change moves inward – quieter on the outside, rearranging on the inside.

Void of Course Moon in January

The void of course Moon is the gap after the Moon has made its last exact aspect in a sign and before it enters the next one. The classic rule is that whatever begins then "comes to nothing" – bad for launches, signatures and purchases, good for routine, tidying, rest and finishing off old things. This month has 13 of them, 74 hours in total, of them 2 long ones (over 12 hours).

Starts Ends Duration Last aspect Moon enters
January 2 January 2 4 hr 28 min Trine to Pluto in Gemini
January 4 January 5 14 hr 07 min Square to Neptune in Cancer
January 7 January 7 4 hr 17 min Opposition to Pluto in Leo
January 9 January 10 13 hr 23 min Opposition to Saturn in Virgo
January 12 January 12 3 hr 50 min Trine to Pluto in Libra
January 15 January 15 3 hr 29 min Square to Pluto in Scorpio
January 17 January 17 3 hr 06 min Sextile to Pluto in Sagittarius
January 19 January 19 9 hr 03 min Sextile to Saturn in Capricorn
January 21 January 21 2 hr 37 min Conjunction to Pluto in Aquarius
January 23 January 23 7 hr 17 min Conjunction to Venus in Pisces
January 25 January 25 2 hr 37 min Sextile to Pluto in Aries
January 27 January 27 2 hr 41 min Square to Pluto in Taurus
January 30 January 30 2 hr 43 min Trine to Pluto in Gemini

We count the classical (Ptolemaic) aspects from the Moon to the Sun and to the planets from Mercury to Pluto. Sites that count only the seven traditional planets get longer windows – sometimes by a day or more.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an astrology calendar, exactly?

It is a schedule of what happens in the sky: when planets form exact angles to each other (aspects), when they move from sign to sign, when the Moon goes through its phases, and when a planet turns retrograde. A horoscope is somebody's interpretation. An astrology calendar is the raw data those interpretations are built on.

Why don't your times match another site?

Usually it is the time zone. Many astrology sites publish in Universal Time (UT), and we show Eastern Time by default, which is 4 or 5 hours behind it. That alone can move an event to the neighbouring day. The time zone switch in the panel at the top settles it in a second.

Does an aspect work exactly at the minute you list?

That is the minute it goes exact. The effect is felt wider – usually a day before and a day after, and for slow planets, for weeks. The exact time tells you where the peak is; it is not something to set an alarm for.

What do you do with a void of course Moon?

Don't start anything that matters in that window: signings, purchases, introductions, first meetings. It is excellent time for routine, for clearing the backlog, for tidying up and for rest. The windows run from a few minutes to a full day – see the table above.

Is a retrograde planet a bad thing?

No. Retrograde motion is an optical effect: from Earth the planet appears to move backward. Astrologically it is a change of mode: the planet's theme works inward and backward instead of forward. The only bad move is pushing hard at something that has no tailwind right now.

Where do these numbers come from?

We calculate the dates from the NASA JPL ephemerides JPL DE440. There is more about the sources and the checks on the methodology page.

Take the calendar with you The month's events as a single .ics file: it opens in Google Calendar, Apple Calendar, Outlook and anything else that understands the format. It downloads immediately and asks nothing about you.
