Retrograde Planets in August

The bar shows what part of the month each planet spends moving backward. Retrograde motion isn't a "ban" – it's a change of rhythm: the planet's theme needs more attention and a second look.

1 6 11 16 21 26 31
Mercury
From August 5 to August 28
Saturn
From Jun 29, 2024 to Nov 15, 2024
Neptune
From Jul 2, 2024 to Dec 7, 2024
Pluto
From May 2, 2024 to Oct 11, 2024
Chiron
From Jul 26, 2024 to Dec 29, 2024
  • Mercury retrograde – deadlines drift, devices act up, and agreements are worth re-reading and saying out loud twice.
  • Saturn retrograde – a stress test: unfinished commitments and old debts come back around.
  • Neptune retrograde – the fog lifts: you can see where the illusions were.
  • Pluto retrograde – deep work: the old lets go slowly and with no witnesses.
  • Chiron retrograde – an old wound speaks up again – so that it finally gets heard.

Void of Course Moon in August

The void of course Moon is the gap after the Moon has made its last exact aspect in a sign and before it enters the next one. The classic rule is that whatever begins then "comes to nothing" – bad for launches, signatures and purchases, good for routine, tidying, rest and finishing off old things. This month has 13 of them, 57 hours in total, of them 1 long one (over 12 hours).

Starts Ends Duration Last aspect Moon enters
August 3 August 3 0 hr 38 min Trine to Neptune in Leo
August 5 August 5 6 hr 01 min Square to Uranus in Virgo
August 8 August 8 0 hr 51 min Opposition to Neptune in Libra
August 9 August 10 24 hr 49 min Sextile to Sun in Scorpio
August 13 August 13 1 hr 00 min Trine to Neptune in Sagittarius
August 15 August 15 0 hr 59 min Trine to Mercury in Capricorn
August 17 August 17 1 hr 01 min Sextile to Neptune in Aquarius
August 19 August 19 4 hr 26 min Opposition to Sun in Pisces
August 21 August 21 1 hr 08 min Conjunction to Neptune in Aries
August 23 August 23 11 hr 16 min Trine to Mercury in Taurus
August 25 August 25 1 hr 23 min Sextile to Neptune in Gemini
August 28 August 28 1 hr 34 min Square to Neptune in Cancer
August 30 August 30 1 hr 45 min Trine to Neptune in Leo

We count the classical (Ptolemaic) aspects from the Moon to the Sun and to the planets from Mercury to Pluto. Sites that count only the seven traditional planets get longer windows – sometimes by a day or more.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an astrology calendar, exactly?

It is a schedule of what happens in the sky: when planets form exact angles to each other (aspects), when they move from sign to sign, when the Moon goes through its phases, and when a planet turns retrograde. A horoscope is somebody's interpretation. An astrology calendar is the raw data those interpretations are built on.

Why don't your times match another site?

Usually it is the time zone. Many astrology sites publish in Universal Time (UT), and we show Eastern Time by default, which is 4 or 5 hours behind it. That alone can move an event to the neighbouring day. The time zone switch in the panel at the top settles it in a second.

Does an aspect work exactly at the minute you list?

That is the minute it goes exact. The effect is felt wider – usually a day before and a day after, and for slow planets, for weeks. The exact time tells you where the peak is; it is not something to set an alarm for.

What do you do with a void of course Moon?

Don't start anything that matters in that window: signings, purchases, introductions, first meetings. It is excellent time for routine, for clearing the backlog, for tidying up and for rest. The windows run from a few minutes to a full day – see the table above.

Is a retrograde planet a bad thing?

No. Retrograde motion is an optical effect: from Earth the planet appears to move backward. Astrologically it is a change of mode: the planet's theme works inward and backward instead of forward. The only bad move is pushing hard at something that has no tailwind right now.

Where do these numbers come from?

We calculate the dates from the NASA JPL ephemerides JPL DE440. There is more about the sources and the checks on the methodology page.

Take the calendar with you The month's events as a single .ics file: it opens in Google Calendar, Apple Calendar, Outlook and anything else that understands the format. It downloads immediately and asks nothing about you.
