An element tells you what kind of energy a planet has: Fire, Water, Earth, or Air. A modality tells you how it acts: starting, sustaining, or adapting. Every sign has both an element and a modality.
What is a modality?
The 12 signs fall into three groups of four according to where they stand in the seasons. Cardinal signs open a season and get things moving. Fixed signs occupy the middle of a season and hold on to what's been gained. Mutable signs close the season and prepare the transition to the next one. Planets in these signs behave in the same way: some love to start things, others see them through, and others adjust to the circumstances.
