Cancer, the Crab, is a zodiac constellation best seen on a very clear night.
One of its familiar stars is Acubens, whose Arabic name means “claw.” Cancer also contains the Beehive star cluster and the two stars known as the Asses. Another remarkable sight is Zeta Cancri, a multiple-star system. Its stars dance around one another on nested orbits, with the widest circuit taking more than a thousand years.
Cancer offers astronomers plenty to investigate. M67 is one of the oldest open star clusters, about four billion years old. A distant quasar, powered by an enormous black hole, adds to the intrigue of how galaxies form and evolve.
Finally, Cancer is home to the Sun-like star 55 Cancri, around which five exoplanets were discovered. In 2003, a radio message intended for extraterrestrial civilizations was sent toward this star. Now we wait for an answer.
